The idea of a Chamber Music Society in Colombo (CMSC) originated in 2001 amongst a few enthusiastic and progressive classically trained musicians whose dream it was to form a chamber music ensemble unique to the country and the region. The dream was fulfilled in January 2008 when the Ensemble of the Chamber Music Society performed its inaugural concert at "Temple Trees" under the artistic direction of Lakshman Joseph-de Saram. With productions in western classical music as well as new music of Sri Lanka, the Society has established itself as one of the best run and critically acclaimed arts organisations in the region, and is generally regarded as the most "Classical" of classical music organizations in the country. The focal point of the Society is chamber music of all eras and configurations, from instrumental duos to opera in collaboration with the CMSC Chorale. These concerts have engaged serious music lovers to sell-out audiences in Colombo, Galle and Jaffna. The ensemble has many members with international concert hall experience. Since formal incorporation in 2007, the not-for-profit CMSC has operated in all years without a single operating deficit. The CMSC owes its success thus far largely to the commitment and hard work of its musicians. It is also grateful to Mr. Hemaka de Alwis of Fairway Holdings, Mr. Mohan Tissanayagam and The Chairman's Circle, Wijeya Newspapers Ltd. MBC Networks, The Goethe-Institut Colombo, Corporate/Embassy sponsors and Benefactors for material and moral support extended in a spirit of true partnership in pursuit of shared goals.
